Personal photography projects are important in the development of each photographer. It is similar to an athlete that works out or trains on their own to improve their speed, strength, stamina and knowledge of the game they love. In an effort to improve my photography and lighting skills, I began a personal project in May of 2013 to spotlight individual athletes.
The goal of the project was to take two portraits of each graduating student from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board that will be or could be playing for a varsity team at the NCAA or CIS level in the 2013-14 season. The students would be attending one of the seven catholic High Schools in Hamilton. The athletes were identified through contact with their coaches and parents. The students volunteered their time and participated with the permission of their parents and guardians.
The portraits were a two-step process.
Step one involved having their portrait taken on a white backdrop in full game uniform. Sports represented include baseball, basketball, football, hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, track, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
Of the over 40 athletes identified as potential varsity athletes, 27 participated.
Here are the athletes:
Step two involved having an action portrait taken in full game uniform. For the most part, this was completed with a black backdrop.
There are still pieces of part two that are waiting on photo sessions to take place. Please continue to check back for more updates on these potential NCAA and CIS varsity athletes.
