Mr. Dejehan Hamilton – Part 1

Years ago as a recent graduate of Teacher’s College, I had the opportunity to work at Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre. The old recreation centre was adjacent to the brand new Cathy Weaver Elementary School. On Monday evenings, Pinky Lewis used Cathy Weaver’s gym to provide additional opportunities for basketball teams from the community to practice. My responsibility was to make sure that nothing went wrong in the gym. The young guy on staff was Dejehan Hamilton, he was responsible for making sure no problems made their way into the building. He was quiet and shy but, the most respectful young man that I had worked with.

Five years later, he is a student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Co-Founder of a Summer Music Camp for kids in Hamilton. His instrument of choice, the Steel Drum, always playing positive beats.

Steel City and the steel drum, this is a first of a few portraits that were taken late at night in the east end of Hamilton.
